日英サイエンスワークショップ（UK-Japan Science Workshop） †

2014.8.5〜7の三日間にかけて東北大学で日英サイエンスワークショプが行われました。 乾・岡崎研究室には、日本人の高校生３人とイギリス人の高校生２人の計５人が訪れ、 機械翻訳のしくみを体験しながら、 前日に訪れた磐梯山のWikipedia記事を協力して英語に翻訳しました。

一日目に、イギリス人と日本人の混合ペアに分かれて人手で翻訳を行い、翻訳の難しさや、言語の壁を体験しました。 その後、たくさんの翻訳文対からコンピューターが自動的に翻訳のルールを獲得できることを学び、実際に３７万文の日英対訳文対を用いて翻訳モデルを学習しました。 人手の翻訳の難しさや、機械翻訳ができること、まだ出来ないこと、機械翻訳がどのように人の助けになるかについて議論を深め、 最後に、機械翻訳を駆使しながら、磐梯山のWikipedia記事を翻訳し、英語版Wikipediaに反映させました。 この結果、英語版の記事は２倍以上の内容になりました。

とても有意義な三日間でした。日本語のWebサイトを自分たちで英語に直して翻訳版と見比べてみると意味が異なるものが多くあり、驚きました。英語版のWikipediaが自分たちの編集したものに書き換えられたときの達成感はとても大きかったです。三日間ありがとうございました。

We were learning about building an automatic translation machine; I learnt the advantages and limitations of automatic translation and how it could be used in unison with human translation to decrease the pressure on human translators and provide services otherwise unavailable. The program of work compiled by the students and professors at Tohoku University was comprehensive, interesting and engaging. I enjoyed the experience thoroughly and feel honored to have been selected to work in the project. The work furthered my interest in communication between language barriers and I am excited to see the progress in this field in the oncoming years.

I would like to thank everyone involved in the preparation of this project and congratulate Tohoku University's Graduate School of Information Sciences for putting in such a brilliant effort to make our experience at Tohoku enjoyable, informative and memorable.

Thank you guys, I hope that perhaps one day we can work together again.

自動翻訳システムの仕組みについて学んだ。自動翻訳システムは人の翻訳に比べて時間がかからずに済むが、複雑な文章になるとわかりにくいものになってしまう。このシステムはいわゆる辞書の機能をもっているわけではないという点が特徴である。このプログラムを通して磐梯山の記事を作りなおすことができたのは達成感があった。まだ課題のあるシステムではあるが、将来はよりよいものとなることを楽しみにしています。興味深いWorkshopの提供、ありがとうございました。

I really really enjoyed the workshop. You had all obviously put a lot of hard work into its preparation. It was really engaging, and enjoyable. The cake was very good. We learned a lot from it. The translation processes involved were all very interesting, and it nurtured my interest in IT & programming. It was a marvellous experience to come to Tohoku and participate in such an interesting, innovative course.

一つの記事を翻訳するだけで、大きな労力が必要になるということを実感しました。 それでもなんとか完成させられたのは自動翻訳のおかげだと思います。
